Prof Dr Franco Taisch

Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Swiss Rock Asset Management AG

He is Full Professor of Business Law and Director of the Business Law Institute at Lucerne University and an Adjunct Faculty Member of the University of St. Gallen Executive School of Management, Technology and Law (ES-HSG) and of the Swiss Finance Institute. He also works as a management consultant, lawyer and managing director at taischconsulting, management and law. For more than 15 years, he has been a member of the board of directors of various Swiss and international companies and is currently a member of the board of directors and the audit committee at Raiffeisen Group, Switzerland’s third largest banking group. Franco Taisch studied in Zurich and New York. He worked and lived in Zürich, Geneva and New York, and subsequently held a number of executive positions with various listed and unlisted international companies. Before joining Swiss Rock, he was a member of the Executive Board of Julius Bär, the largest private bank in Switzerland.

Dr Roman von Ah

He sits on the Executive Committee of the Swiss Financial Analysts’ Association (SFAA) and is Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Swiss Training Centre for Investment Professionals (AZEK). For over ten years, he has lectured at AZEK on the subject of derivative financial instruments, bonds and wealth management. Before joining Swiss Rock, he sat on the Executive Board of Julius Bär Group, Switzerland’s biggest private bank, where he was responsible for the Asset Management division. He studied economics at the University of Freiburg, where he also took a doctorate while pursuing his career. 

Klaus Mutschler

One of the founding partners of Swiss Rock and a member of the Board of Directors

He also founded Mutschler Holding Inc. For over twenty years, he has followed a successful career in financial services, partly as the founder of cash.life AG in Pullach, Germany. He studied business administration at the European Business School in Oestrich-Winkel (near Frankfurt am Main), Germany, and in London and Paris.

Dr Roman von Ah

He sits on the Executive Committee of the Swiss Financial Analysts’ Association (SFAA) and is Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Swiss Training Centre for Investment Professionals (AZEK) where he has lectured on the subject of derivative financial instruments, bonds and wealth management for over ten years. He began his career with UBS as a portfolio manager for global institutional clients. This was followed by a period with IST as portfolio manager and pension fund advisor. He sat on the Group Executive Board of Swissca Group and held the position of CEO at Swissca Portfolio Management AG with responsibility for over CHF 50 billion of assets under management. Before joining Swiss Rock, he sat on the Executive Board of Julius Bär Group, Switzerland’s biggest private bank, where he was responsible for the Asset Management division, with global responsibility for CHF 120 billion of assets under management. He is a popular speaker at investor conferences in Switzerland and abroad and has published well over a hundred articles in the financial press. He studied economics at the University of Freiburg, where he also took a doctorate while pursuing his career.

Lobsang Gangshontsang

Senior Operations Manager

He is a certified accountant in Switzerland with over thirty years’ banking experience, primarily in the areas of finance, administration and logistics. Over the course of his career, he has worked for various banks, including Bankers Trust AG, Chemical Bank (Zurich) and Bank Sogénal (Zurich). Before joining Swiss Rock, he spent twenty years with the Mizuho Financial Group, one of Japan’s largest banks, where during his last seven years he headed the Zurich branch of Mizuho International plc, London (MHIZH) in the position of General Manager. MHIZH specialises in the issue of securities from Asian issuers and in the purchase and sale of Asian securities. He was responsible for key areas such as human resources (new appointments and salary decisions) and acted as the point of contact for the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA), the auditors and other official bodies. As Head of the Zurich branch, he was also responsible for the management and organisation (including the internal control system - ICS) of MHIZH; risk policy and risk management; compliance and adherence to the budget; and compliance with all legislation and regulations governing banks and financial institutions.

Bruno Heusser

responsible for fixed income and mixed mandates

He has nearly two decades of experience in bond/interest rate analysis and in bond portfolio management. Bruno Heusser began his career as an economist and bond analyst with UBS’ Investment Research & Portfolio Management division, where he was responsible for interest rate curve and credit risk strategies for major strategy funds. In addition to analysis and portfolio management, he authored regular market commentaries and numerous specialist studies in the field of quantitative bond management. From 1997 to 2005, he was responsible for investment funds and institutional clients within the CHF bond division at Credit Suisse Asset Management. In 2001, he took over the European High-Yield Division (non-investment grade), a role that involved spending a good deal of time in London and New York. In 2005, he returned to UBS, where he managed a large number of UBS bond funds and institutional clients. He later set up the Portable Alpha Derivatives Unit and other associated derivatives products (Derivatives Overlay Fund, Leveraged Credit Fund, Euro Inflation-Linked Fund) in Zurich. He also brought his knowledge and expertise to bear as a member of the global Fixed-Income Investment Committee. Bruno Heusser is an economist (lic.oec.publ. from the University of Zurich) and specialises in finance. His master’s thesis contains an empirical review of the most popular interest-rate forecasting models. His main interests lie in the practical application of quantitative methods in the area of bond portfolio management.

Dr Martin Schlatter

Has over 15 years experience in equity portfolio management

His career began with Credit Suisse Private Banking, where he helped to develop the risk management software used to analyse complex customer portfolios. He was asked to set up a quantitative investment research unit to ensure that the information supplied could be used even more effectively in the investment process. The results were integrated into fund products from 2000 onwards. As Head of Equity Management at Bank Leu, he developed and implemented long/short equity strategies with absolute return targets; derivative strategies; and a range of products that also incorporated volatility as a value driver. The strategies were predominantly used for institutional customers and ultra high net worth individuals (UHNWI). Following the merger that created Clariden Leu, Martin Schlatter was appointed Head of Regional Equity Management. Martin Schlatter took a degree in mechanical engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich and subsequently wrote his doctoral thesis (dr.sc.techn. ETH) on the ‘Modelling of Turbulence-Chemistry Interactions with Respect to NOx Formation in Turbulent Non-Premixed Flames’.

The management team will be expanded by the members of the Executive Board, Dr. Rudolf Lörtscher, Key Account Manager, Dr. René Dubacher, Senior Equity Manager and Head of Research and Development, Stefan Knecht, Head of legal and compliance, Daniel Gerber, Head of Institutional Clients & Wholesale, and Arno Grüter, Head of Independent Asset Managers & Institutional Clients.

Dr Rudolf Lörtscher

A partner with Swiss Rock Asset Management AG and responsible for the Customer division

After studying economics at the University of Zurich, he worked on economic, structural and regional problems at the KOF Swiss Economic Institute (part of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich) and at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy. In the mid-1980s, he moved into banking and took up a post as Director of Quantitative Investment Research and Deputy Head of the Financial Analysis department with the former Swiss Bank Corporation. In this position, he launched and managed a number of investment funds (including the first index fund for Swiss equities) and introduced a comprehensive risk control system for the Swiss Bank Corporation’s equity funds. In 1992, he joined Switzerland’s Cantonal Bank Group, where he initially ran the Prevista investment foundation before going on to set up Swisscanto Portfolio Management in the position of CEO. In 1998, he joined a boutique investment firm as partner and CEO. In 1999, following the sale of the firm, he moved to UBS Global Asset Management as Managing Director with responsibility for Business Development and Client Relationship Management. Rudolf Lörtscher lectures and writes on investment and pension fund issues. He also teaches portfolio management in the School of Business at the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland.

Dr René Dubacher

Senior Equities Manager and Head of Research and Development

With over twenty years’ experience in portfolio management, manager selection and in product development for institutional customers, he has a strong background in the practical application of empirical methods to equity portfolio management. These include ‘Index-enhanced’, ‘long-short’ and ‘market-neutral’ equity portfolios. During his earlier career, he held several high-level positions: as Senior Portfolio Manager with Mathematica Capital Management in San Francisco, USA, where he acted as Lead Portfolio Manager for all global and regional index-enhanced portfolios, and as Co-Manager for the equity market-neutral hedge fund Mathematica Global Equity Fund. From 2006 to 2012, he held the position of Managing Partner at AlphaStream Capital Management in San Francisco, USA and Pfäffikon, Switzerland, where he performed a number of roles as Portfolio Manager for European Equity Long/Short Funds, a Swiss equities index-enhanced product and various strategy portfolios. As a member of the senior management team at the Zurich Group (Zurich Scudder Investments), he was responsible for institutional operations in Switzerland. He studied economics and financial market theory in the Swiss cities of Berne and St. Gallen, and in Rochester, USA. He was one of the first students of Prof Dr Zimmermann to gain his doctorate at the University of St. Gallen (HSG), where he published a wide range of articles and papers.
